Broadcasters Strike out at third Congressional Hearing
Washington, D.C. July 24, 2012 – Today’s Senate Commerce Committee hearing “The Cable Act at 20” was the third strike in the broadcasters’ effort to defend antiquated retransmission consent rules.
As was the case at the April Senate hearing entitled, “The Emergence of Online Video: Is It the Future?” and last month’s “Future of Video” House hearing, today’s event demonstrated widespread, bipartisan support for reforming the ’92 Cable Act.
Members from both sides of the aisle recognize how things have changed since 1992 including the marketplace and the impact of blackouts on consumers all over the country. With five months left in 2012, broadcasters have already driven 69 blackouts this year – a 35 percent increase over 2011.
ATVA commends the leadership of Committee Chair John Rockefeller, IV (D-WV) and Ranking Member, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) for holding this important hearing and Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) for his leadership in advocating for reform.
Three hearings, three strikes. It’s clear, the time has come for action.
