Topeka: Broadcaster Retrans Muscle on Steroids
Jul 22, 2011
Latest Example of Dire Need for Retrans Reform
WASHINGTON, D.C. July 21, 2011 – Broadcasters, who exploit government mandated privileges that give them the upper hand in retrans negotiations just got a steroid injection in Topeka. The FCC’s approval of the sale of Topeka’s ABC affiliate means two companies, which coordinate retrans deals, will control three of the four network stations in the market. That gives them a free hand to blackout Topeka viewers on not one, but three network stations as a negotiating tactic.
This is just the latest example of why the FCC and Congress must reform outdated retrans rules to protect consumers.
